Welcome 2017!

Hello and welcome to 2017! I am really looking forward to this new year, drawing a line under 2016, a year that for many reasons was not great.

I had chance over the Christmas break to reflect on 2016, what I learned, what I achieved, what I am ready to let go of. I also contemplated how I would like 2017 to shape up. I’ve never really been into goal setting or new year resolutions but I am changing my opinion on these a bit! I’ve realised that if I’m not clear on what I want, I drift aimlessly, so, I have been focusing on what I would like to achieve this coming year. I’ve been doing it with what feels like, for me a softer, more yoga approach, than goal setting (though I very much admire people who can set goals, I really wish I could!) thinking about how I want to feel, and what I want my life to be looking like

Dru Yoga for goal setting

Dru Yoga can help you reach your goals

at the end of 2017 instead. I hope you’ve had chance to reflect too, and found a focus that works for you.

As you know in yoga we work with our energy centres, chakras, relating among other things to different areas of our lives. These provide a great starting point for creating positive changes. These areas are :

  1. Financial Security (base chakra, Mooladhara)

  2. Relationships (sacral chakra, Svadhistana)

  3. Well being, energy levels, health (fire centre, Manipura)

  4. How much you love, honour and approve of yourself (heart chakra, Anahata). If just reading this makes you feel uncomfortable then here would be a great place to start!

  5. Communications, in all circumstances, including with yourself (throat centre, Vishuddhi)

  6. Purpose in Life (brow chakra, Ajna)

  7. Practical Spirituality, whatever that means to you (crown, Sahasrara)

Have a think about each of these, where would you score them on a scale of 1 – 10? Notice if some of the areas are low, this could be an indication of where to start with your dreaming or goal setting. You only need to focus on one at time, don’t over face yourself!

Take some time in meditation or silent time to think about this area of your life. Add in some yoga to support the chakra you are focussing on too. Perhaps do some journalling or creative work. Listen to your body and your heart, what are they telling you, what do you need to take the best care of yourself, what do you want to do? Write it down.

We have a put up a vision board at our Acanthus studio, complete with coloured card and pens, and we are inviting all our students, visitors and tutors to commit their goals to paper, (anonymous – you know which your dream is :)). I think we are more likely to stick to things that we have put in writing, they serve as a heart felt reminder when things get challenging.

Remember we are here to help you. Share your goals with us, tell us which chakra you have noticed needs a little bit of TLC and we can plan to help you, include beneficial yoga in classes and give you ideas on things to practice at home to keep up the momentum. We are all properly trained and qualified Dru Yoga teachers, this means we never ever teach “one size fits all” lessons, every lesson we teach is tailored to suit the people in the room, and that’s our guarantee.

This is the first of my new year posts all on the theme of creating the life you love to look at, which I am going to be posting weekly through January. Next time, I’m going to share some yoga ways to boost your energy, to give us the oomph we need to make our dreams happen 🙂

I’ll leave you with that lovely line from the musical ‘South Pacific’ …. “If you don’t have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?”

May 2017 be joy filled and peaceful for us all. Ix
