Introducing Hilary, one of Inside Out’s tutor’s.

Read what she has to say to our questions.

  1. How long have you been practising yoga and how long have you been teaching?
I have been practising yoga since I was 23 and teaching for 33 years.
  2. What first got you into yoga?
My mum had died when I was away studying and when I came home the emptiness was overbearing.  My solution to grief was to join as many evening classes as possible. Yoga was one. I did four classes and it planted a seed which meant that everywhere I went after that I sought out a yoga class, eventually starting to practise on my own.  That’s when it really came alive for me.
  3. What is your favourite yoga pose or practice, and why?
I have two – one is Shoulder Stand – I have been practising this about 3 times a week for years and love it.  It is an instant stretch, work-out, mood enhancer and tiredness eliminator. The second one is Cobra – and especially the Dru 4 part Cobra.  I do it very often and it immediately sorts out my back. I feel stretched and great after it. If I can’t get back to sleep in the middle of the night, I practise Cobra (in bed) and that does the trick.
  4. And which is your least favourite! And why?
Dancer – ashamed to say, as it has so many benefits. Generally, not keen on balance and therefore realise I have to do it!
  5. Any claims to fame?
I used to be PA to the Ambassador of Egypt.
  6. Any other interests or hobbies?
Love reading a good novel, growing veg and flowers, cooking Ayurvedic food, and walking.
  7. Can you describe your yoga class in 3 words?
    Fun, nurturing work-out
  8. Do you have any advice for someone thinking about trying Dru Yoga for the first time?
Just do it, let go of any preconceptions and just try it.  It’s accessible to everyone no matter your level of fitness, flexibility, body condition and you feel so much better after it.
